Coral Communities on Marginal High-Latitude Reefs in West Australian Marine Parks

چکیده

Many temperate reefs are experiencing a shift towards greater abundance of tropical species in response to marine heatwaves and long-term ocean warming worldwide. Baseline data for coral communities growing high-latitude is required better understand ecosystem changes over time. In this study, we explore spatial temporal trends the distribution from 1999 2019 at 118 reef sites within five parks located south-west Western Australia (WA) between 30° 35° S. Our estimates cover were generally low (<5%), except few Jurien Bay Marine Park Rottnest Island Reserve where was 10% 30%. Interannual genera assemblages detected but not consistent time, whereas significant increases found lowest latitude site Bay. Coral primarily distinguished by Turbinaria spp. Marmion Ngari Capes Park, Pocillopora Dipsastraea findings suggest that conditions WA favorable ongoing survival existing there minimal signs expansion most study sites. composition on these may, however, change with increased occurrence heatwaves. This provides valuable benchmark assessing future highlights need targeted hard-coral surveys quantify subtle community assemblages.

Dynamic Stability of Coral Reefs on the West Australian Coast

Monitoring changes in coral cover and composition through space and time can provide insights to reef health and assist the focus of management and conservation efforts. We used a meta-analytical approach to assess coral cover data across latitudes 10-35°S along the west Australian coast, including 25 years of data from the Ningaloo region. Current estimates of coral cover ranged between 3 and ...

Monitoring Coral Health to Determine Coral Bleaching Response at High Latitude Eastern Australian Reefs: An Applied Model for A Changing Climate

Limited information is available on the bleaching susceptibility of coral species that dominate high latitude reefs along the eastern seaboard of Australia. The main aims of this study were to: (i) monitor coral health and spatial patterns of coral bleaching response at the Solitary Islands Marine Park (SIMP) and Lord Howe Island Marine Park (LHIMP), to determine variability of bleaching suscep...

effeCts on CorAl reefs

A hurricane (also tropical cyclone, typhoon) is a warm-core, low-pressure system that develops over tropical or subtropical waters. Most hurricanes form from a trough of low-pressure, over ocean surface temperatures greater than 26°C. As air moves across the ocean surface, it extracts moisture (water vapour) and energy (as a result of evaporation) from the ocean. The low pressure draws air inwa...

Turning up the Heat: Increasing Temperature and Coral Bleaching at the High Latitude Coral Reefs of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands

BACKGROUND Coral reefs face increasing pressures particularly when on the edge of their distributions. The Houtman Abrolhos Islands (Abrolhos) are the southernmost coral reef system in the Indian Ocean, and one of the highest latitude reefs in the world. These reefs have a unique mix of tropical and temperate marine fauna and flora and support 184 species of coral, dominated by Acropora species...

Keeping It Local: Dispersal Limitations of Coral Larvae to the High Latitude Coral Reefs of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands

In 2011 the first recorded bleaching event for the high latitude Houtman Abrolhos Islands (HAI) coral communities was documented. This bleaching event highlighted the question of whether a supply of 'heat tolerant' coral recruits from the tropical north would be sufficient to provide a level of resistance for these reefs to future warming events. Using Lagrangian modelling we showed that due to...
